TUSCALOOSA – The Crimson Tide volleyball team continued its solid spring tournament play this weekend in split scrimmage action against perennially-strong Georgia Tech this past Saturday at the “CAVE”.
Alabama and the Yellowjackets battled in a five-game contest during their morning session and then faced each other in a three-game competition in the afternoon. Georgia Tech finished the 2002 season ranked in the AVCA’s Top 20.
Tech earned a hard-fought 3-2 (30-22, 19-30, 30-28, 11-15, 16-14) victory over the Tide in the day’s first matchup. Sophomore Erin Heffner continued her stellar all-around play leading the team with 18 kills, 13 digs and an impressive .417 hitting percentage over the five games. Kory Tull finished with 13 kills and six total blocks while Jennifer Bibber recorded 10 kills. As a team, UA boasted a .254 hitting performance and finished with 22 team blocks.
In the afternoon session, Bama got the upper hand taking 2 of the 3 games (30-25, 15-30, 15-10) from Georgia Tech. Heffner again led the Alabama attack, finishing with 10 kills, 8 digs and three block solos. Kelley Potter posted 7 kills en route to a .400 hitting performance. Setter Kenna Milner finished the day with 87 assists, 8 kills and 14 digs.
“I feel like we are improving with every scrimmage,” said UA head coach Judy Green. “We have been trying some people at different spots this spring and our team continues to adjust and play well in those situations. I have been really pleased with our defensive intensity at the net and our continually improving defense behind our block and the stats from this weekend really reflect our work in those areas. Another area of improvement has been in our overall ball control.”
Alabama continues its spring season schedule this weekend when they travel to Duke for a four-team tournament. The Tide will face Duke, Charlotte and South Carolina in matches on Saturday. UA concludes its spring slate with a four-team home tournament on Mar. 29th.
