Bama Volleyball Starts Strong in Spring Season

TUSCALOOSA – The University of Alabama volleyball team took 7 of 9 games from the University of Georgia in a two-session scrimmage this past Saturday between the two schools in Athens, Ga. The competition marked the spring season opener for both squads.
In the morning session, Bama and Georgia played four games with the Tide posting a 30-24, 30-19, 30-25, 19-17 sweep. Highlights of the first games included the first collegiate action for defensive specialist Mary Beth Moore and the return to the lineup of redshirt freshman Jennifer Cusimano. Erin Heffner led the UA attack with 17 kills followed by 15 from Kory Tull. Tull also paced the Tide with 12 digs and hit at an impressive .610 clip from the right side position.
The two teams met for a five-game set in the evening session, playing the first three games to 30 followed by a pair of games to 15. Alabama earned a 2-1 edge in the 30-point contests (30-20, 30-32, 30-17) and split the final two games 15-12 and 11-15. Heffner again led the UA offense posting 20 kills and 12 digs. Three other Alabama players reached double figure kills including Jennifer Bibber (15), Erin Price (12) and Kelley Potter (11). Price and Potter also each tallied 12 digs in the competition.
Kenna Milner set for the Tide during both sessions finishing the day with 129 total assists, eight kills and 18 digs.
The Crimson Tide continues its spring season schedule with a home scrimmage this Saturday (Mar. 15) against Georgia Tech. Alabama and the Yellow Jackets will participate in a two-session competition with the morning scrimmage beginning at 9:30 am in the “CAVE” at the back of Coleman Coliseum. Admission to all UA volleyball competitions is always free.
