The University of Alabama will meet 2003 Ohio Valley Conference Champions Austin Peay on Saturday, December 6 in Tuscaloosa. Alabama brings a 3-2 overall record and a five-game home win streak into the game. Austin Peay is 2-2 overall and is led by a veteran squad that includes four seniors and a junior in its starting rotation. Both teams were NCAA tournament teams in 2003.
"They are an excellent team," said Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried of the Governors. "They have their top eight players back from an NCAA tournament team. They start four seniors and a junior. They're going to be an unbelievably difficult game for us. When I look down the schedule right now, this is the start of 'Champions Row.' Like Death Row. Everybody on our schedule between now and the conference opener has either won their league, won their league championship tournament or was picked to win their league this year. So there's some type of championship hung on every team starting with Austin Peay, so we've got to be ready to play. They are very good, a very well-coached team, a good defensive team. We're going to have to beat them and work to do it."
Tip off in Coleman Coliseum is set for 4 p.m. CT. A limited number of souvenir Crimson Tide-stamped mini-basketballs will be given away to the first to arrive through the doors. Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $15 for adults and $8 for kids aged 15 and under.
