Alabama Swimming and Diving Wins Four-Way Meet

The Alabama swimming and diving teams took to the road for the first time this weekend and came away with wins against Delta State, Drury and Louisiana-Monroe.
Alabama's men (4-0-0) beat Delta State 122-18, Drury 101-39 and La.-Monroe 94-46. The Crimson Tide (4-0-0) women beat Delta State 117-23, Drury 84-54 and La.-Monroe 106-34.
"The team did a nice job of racing and we were able to see our team perform in many different areas throughout the course of the meet," first year Tide head coach Eric McIlquham said. "We still have a lot of work to do but this gives us a great starting point for the rest of our season. I am pleased with our progress up till now, both with the team and the entire staff."
On the women's side senior Lane Bassham, sophomore Anna Grant and freshman Nichole Weatherman all came away with a pair of individual wins to lead the Tide. Bassham dove her way to victories off the one and three-meter diving boards, scoring 293.20 and 293.75 points respectively. Grant won the 100 freestyle with a 52.84 and the 200 freestyle with a 1:53.04. Weatherman won the 1000 freestyle with a 10:20.91 and the 500 freestyle with a 4:59.77. Her mark in the 1000 freestyle set a pool record and she was the only swimmer in the meet under five minutes in the 500 freestyle.
Sophomore Victoria Genova won the 200 butterfly at 2:03.56 while freshman Amanda Gilbert brought home first in the 400 IM with a 4:33.84.
Freshman Arlene Semeco two pool records and was part of a third during the meet. She won the 50 freestyle by more than a second, turning in a record 23.43. She also set the 100 freestyle record in leading off the 400 freestyle relay with a 51.22.
Semeco, freshman Melina Bassino, Grant and freshman Tara Theilemann finished off the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, posting a pool record 3:31.45.
For the men, senior Ben Worby and junior Stewart Smith led the way. Worby won three events and Smith two. Worby won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes and the 400 IM. In the breaststrokes he went 58.67 in the 100 and 2:07.08 in the 200. He posted a 4:05.70 in the 400 IM. Smith won the one and three-meter boards, posting a 261.95 off the one-meter and a 272.90 off the three. Senior James Willcox also earned individual gold, taking the 200 freestyle with a 1:41.53.
The men finished off the day with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Sophomores Troy Davidson and Darren Erasmus along with Willcox and senior Brendan Ashby posted a 3:05.74 to take the win.
Alabama returns to the road for its next meet, facing Auburn on the Plains November 21 at 5 p.m.
