DESTIN, Fla. - The University of Alabama women's golf team carded an opening round 305 on Friday at the Chrysler ACC/SEC Women's Golf Challenge being played at the par 71, 5,937 yard Raven Course of the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
Junior Darby Sligh led the way for the Crimson Tide shooting a one-under-par 70. It was Sligh's second sub-par round of the season and places her in a tie for fifth in the individual competition. Alabama is in sixth place after round one in the team competition.
"My coach and teammates helped me tweak my alignment during the practice round," said Sligh. "And that made all the difference. I felt very comfortable on the course today and was able to hit nearly every green. I missed a few putt opportunities that would have made the score even lower, but I was pleased with how I played today. Hopefully, I can just keep it going through the weekend."
Others competing for Alabama at the ACC/SEC Challenge included Amy Middleton with a 75 (T18th), Megan George 77 (T31st), Anna Strandberg 83 (55th) and Mandy Tedder 86 (59th).
"First of all, I think Darby played fantastic today," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "Overall, I feel like we had a pretty solid round. Each player just had one or two holes that seemed to cause them problems. We just need to continue to work hard on the course and we'll be right in the hunt."
No. 1 ranked Duke leads the team competition following an eight-under-par round 276. Auburn is in second at 289 followed by Florida (295), North Carolina (298), Wake Forest (301) and Alabama. Florida State (306), Maryland (311), North Carolina State (311), Kentucky (311) and Mississippi State (318) all trail the Tide.
Competition at the ACC/SEC Challenge continues throughout the weekend with 18 holes of play scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday.
