Middleton Leads Bama Women's Golf at Mercedes-Benz Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of Alabama freshman women’s golfer Amy Middleton carded a team-leading 223 including a final round 76 to finish in a tie for 17th at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championship on Tuesday at the Fox Den Country Club.
Middleton, a native of Citronelle, Ala., earned her first career Top 20 finish with rounds of 73-74-76. As a team the Crimson Tide finished in 14th place following a round of 311 on the final day. The Tide finished with a score of 310-307-311/928.
“Overall we played pretty well,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “We just had some small struggles that ended up really hurting our scores. I am happy with our effort and I saw a lot of positive things from the players. This team has the potential to be very competitive we just need to get a few small things corrected.”
Junior Darby Sligh carded a 77-77-79/233 (T56th) for the Tide followed by Mandy Tedder with a 80-77-78/235 (T62nd), Megan George 80-82-78/240 (T73rd) and Carina Sorensen 89-79-85/253 (86th).
Ohio State captured the team competition with a score of 296-292-296/884. The Buckeyes edged Oklahoma State (291-298-296/885) by a single shot. The Swedish Junior National team (892), Tulane (893) and Georgia (897) rounded out the top five. OSU’s Allison Hanna earned the individual medalist crown with a score of 217. Hanna defeated Arkansas’ Courtney Mahon in a playoff for the title.
The Crimson Tide has little time to rest as the squad returns to Tuscaloosa just in time to hit the road again for the Chrysler ACC/SEC Women’s Golf Challenge in Destin, Fla. The three-day event being played at the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort’s Raven Course (par 71, 5,937 yards) starts on Friday. Alabama’s travel squad for the event includes Middleton, Sligh, Tedder, George and UA senior Anna Strandberg.
