The ceremony will be held adjacent to the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility, between the indoor building and the Sam Bailey Track.
Speaking will be The University of Alabama's interim president, Dr. J. Barry Mason; Athletics Director Mal Moore; Crimson Tradition Fund chairmen Paul Bryant, Jr., and Joe Kelley and head football coach Mike Price. The ground breaking location is the site where much of the construction will be taking place in the early phases.
The facility improvements will include renovation of Bryant Hall into a state-of-the-art academic center and dormitory; a new weight room and offices and renovation of the existing Football Building; modernization of Coleman Coliseum; new tennis and soccer complex and north end zone expansion of Bryant-Denny Stadium.
LSU Marks 2nd of Three Straight Sellouts
Saturday afternoon's LSU game is sold out. It also comes in the middle of a stretch of three consecutive home game sellouts for the Crimson Tide this season. The January 25th Kentucky game was a sellout as is Alabama's next home appearance (following LSU), the February 15th Auburn game. Coleman Coliseum seats 15,316.
Tide & Tigers Hungry For Wins
Not only does Saturday's game between Alabama and LSU match two Southeastern Conference Western Division teams going head to head, it also pits two teams trying to snap short losing streaks.
Alabama is 12-5 overall, and has lost its last three games, two on the road (Auburn and Ole Miss) and another at home (Kentucky). The loss to the No. 7 ranked 'Cats was particularly disappointing for the players and coaching staff as it snapped Alabama's 28-game home win streak that dated to January 28, 2001 (Arkansas).
The Alabama team had no mid-week game this week (the SEC sets the conference schedule) but has been anything but idle. The team practiced twice on Monday. The first of those sessions was set to begin at 6 a.m. but by 5:30 a.m. all of the players were already on the floor working diligently. They've held early morning practices this week, starting up by 5:45 a.m. and have responded with a "renewed vigor and purpose" according to Tide head coach Mark Gottfried.
LSU is attempting to snap back from four straight losses in a string that started with a home game against Ole Miss on January 18, then back-to-back road trips to Arkansas then Mississippi State. And it played the early week game this week, hosting No. 4 Florida but falling 70-53 on Tuesday night.
Tigers' December 21st Win Helped Tide Reach High
Alabama achieved its first number one ranking on December 23rd, a rise that came compliments of a feat by LSU. LSU knocked off No. 1 Arizona 66-65 in the Tigers' Pete Maravich Assembly Center on December 21st. Two days later, an unbeaten Alabama team slid right in from the No. 2 spot in the AP poll to No. 1 where it remained for two consecutive weeks, the December 23 poll and the December 30th poll.
This Series Dates to 1916
The Alabama vs. LSU men's basketball series date to Baton Rouge, 1916, where the first game was played and where Alabama collected a 44-26 win.
Saturday afternoon's meeting will be the 149th meeting between these two teams. Alabama leads the series 89-59 and has swept it the past two seasons. After losing both games against the Tigers in 2000, Alabama has won the last four straight. Its last loss to LSU dates to the 2000 season in Tuscaloosa where the Tigers handedly defeated the Tide and its group of freshmen starters (Erwin Dudley, Terrance Meade, Rod Grizzard) 93-60.
The teams will meet again in the regular season finale' for both which will take place in Baton Rouge on March 8, 2003 at 7 p.m.
Following is a quick series breakdown:
- Series Record: Alabama 89 wins; LSU 59 wins
- Streak: Alabama has won the last four
- In Tuscaloosa: Alabama leads 56-17
- In Baton Rouge: LSU leads 38-27
- Neutral Sites: Alabama leads 6-4
