Tide Men's Tennis Opens Dual Season with Two Wins

Tuscaloosa, Ala. - Alabama (2-0) opened the 2003 dual season with shutout wins over Troy State (0-3) and Southern Miss (0-1) at the Hank Crisp Indoor facility on Sunday.
In the opening match, the Tide won the doubles point despite a loss at No.1 by the 8th-ranked doubles team of Geoff Hiscox and Stephen Mitchell to Troy State's Pablo Martinez and Rolando Vargas. Alabama swept all six singles matches to secure the 7-0 shutout. Christian Brodersen clinched the match for Alabama with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Robert van Swelm. Brodersen scored his 15th and 16th consecutive dual-match victories on Sunday.
The afternoon match saw another shutout with Alabama winning all three doubles and all six singles matches. Today's victories' were the first in Division I for Crimson Tide head coach Billy Pate. Michael Ray Pallares clinched the second match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Marc Lux.
"It was a great start for us. We competed very well," Pate said. "We want to certainly use this momentum in the next several weeks. Everyone is playing with a lot of confidence"
Alabama goes on the road to meet Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. next Saturday, and returns home in two weeks.
