TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- After compiling the highest batting average in the Cape Code Baseball League, the summer accolades keep piling up for University of Alabama junior Peter Stonard.
Stonard was named to the 2002 Baseball America Summer All-America team, selected by Baseball America’s senior writer for college baseball John Manuel. The Clayton, Mo., native batted .348 (56-for-161) with two home runs and 27 RBI for the Cotuit Kettleers.
In addition, Baseball America also tabbed Stonard as the league’s No. 9 prospect after being named to the league’s Most Valuable Player.
“He’s a line-drive, on-base machine who runs well,” according to Baseball America’s executive editor Jim Callis.
Stonard is the first player in the history of Alabama baseball to win the Pat Sorenti Award (MVP) and joins some elite company in CCBL history, joining the likes of Thurman Munson (1967), Paul O’Neill (1975), Buck Showalter (1976), Ron Darling (1980), Terry Steinbach (1982), Jason Varitek (1993) and Darin Erstad (1994).
Stonard was also the recipient of the 2002 Thurman Munson Award, presented annually to the CCBL player with the highest batting average. In 42 games, Stonard batted .348 (56-for-161) with two home runs and 27 RBI. He is also the first UA player to ever win the CCBL batting title.
In addition to his CCBL batting title, Stonard led the league in total hits (56) and ranked second in RBI (27), fourth in stolen bases (18) and fourth in on-base percentage (.432).
Stonard and the Crimson Tide have begun individual workouts and the full squad will begin team workouts on Monday, Sept. 16. The first weekend of fall intrasquad games is set for Sept. 20-22. All practices and intrasquad games are open to the general public and there is no admission charge for scrimmage games.
