Crimson Tide Wins Three Singles Flights at Roberta Alison

Sunday was the final day of the 2002 Roberta Alison Fall Classic hosted by the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide won three of the seven singles flights to go along with their one doubles flight championship won on Friday.
“I think the weekend went very well,” UA head coach Jenny Mainz said. “I felt good about the matches and the way we prepared.”
Senior Sophie Cremers won singles flight “B” with her 7-5, 6-2 win over Carolina Gago of Auburn-Montgomery. Cremers was down 5-1 in the first set before battling back to win the set.
Bama freshman Marie-France Lord-Andrade won singles flight “C” as Dominika Nemcovicova from South Alabama defaulted due to an ankle injury. Bama’s Natalie McElveen won singles flight “F” by defeating teammate Melissa Minor.
UA’s Millie Begovic won her fifth place match over Marcelle Hirt of Mississippi State in flight “A”. The Tide’s Robin Stephenson defaulted her match in singles flight “A” to Melisa San Martin from Louisville due to injury.
Freshman Nathalie Koppelle lost the flight “D” finals match to Marlieke Jager of South Alabama. Ashley Bentley won the third place match against Julia Searle of Arkansas State in flight “E”. Alabama’s Julie Ferguson lost in the finals of flight “G” to Nadia Dellarciprete of UAB.
“It was a good third day performance,” Mainz said. “We achieved what we were going out for which was to get more match play experience.”
Alabama will compete next weekend at the Brown Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island from October 4-6. Robin Stephenson and Millie Begovic will travel to the Riviera All-American held in Los Angeles on October 5-13.
