Alabama Sends Six Players to Flight Finals of Roberta Alison

The University of Alabama hosted the second day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide sent six players to the finals of seven different flights.
“I was very happy with our performance overall today as a team,” UA head coach Jenny Mainz said. “I felt good about the way we stepped up in a couple of situations.”
Singles flight “G”, which was a round robin draw, will feature Bama’s Julie Ferguson and UAB’s Nadia Dellarciprete in the finals. Both Ferguson and Dellarciprete won both of their singles matches in the draw which has four players.
In singles flight “F”, Bama’s Melissa Minor will face her teammate Natalie McElveen in the finals. UA’s Nathalie Koppelle will face Marlieke Jager of South Alabama in the finals of flight “D”. Marie-France Lord-Andrade will take on Dominika Nemcovicova of South Alabama in flight “C” finals. Minor, McElveen, Koppelle and Lord-Andrade are four of six freshman for the Crimson Tide.
Senior Sophie Cremers won her first two matches to set up a match against Carolina Gago in the flight “B” finals. Freshman Robin Stephenson for UA split sets with the number one tournament seeded Viktoria Stoklasova of South Alabama before having to default due to injury in flight “A”. Also in flight “A”, Millie Begovic lost her first round match and won her consolation round match in straight sets. Freshman Ashley Bentley won her first round match in flight “E” before losing her second round match. For the day Alabama won fourteen of eighteen singles matches and two of those loses were due to default.
“We need to come out tomorrow and have a good third day performance,” Mainz said.
The final round of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic will be played on Sunday starting at 8:00 a.m. The matches will be played at the UA Varsity Courts as well as the UA Recreation Center Courts.
