For University of Alabama All-SEC catcher Lacy Prejean, it might be one of the most exciting off-seasons in her career as she was selected to attend the USA Softball Olympic Trials.
Prejean attended an open tryout in Altamonte Springs, Florida on August 24, where she and several other players were put through several different drills. Her selection was not without a little drama.
“I didn’t hear anything for a week so I thought it was over,” said Prejean. “I was on my computer checking email and I saw this letter from an address I didn’t know. I almost deleted it because I thought it was junk mail. Then I noticed it was addressed to me and it said USA Softball so I opened it and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve got to call somebody!’”
And she called Alabama Head Coach Patrick Murphy.
“She said that she felt really good about the tryouts, so I wasn’t completely surprised,” said Murphy. “This is a great opportunity for her.”
All players invited to the September camp are a combination of players from the 2002 Open Tryouts, members of the 2002 Women's World Team, 2002 Elite Team and at-large invitees.
Prejean next participates in the Women's National Team Camp September 26-29, at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. USA Softball will select a core group of athletes to return to the 2003 National Team Camp in June 2003.
