While its still early in the season, Alabama head volleyball coach Judy Green is excited and pleased with what she has seen so far from her squad.
The Crimson Tide players returned to campus on Aug. 6 and began a two-a-day practice regime last Thursday (Aug. 8). The team earned a well deserved day off on Monday following an impressive stretch of seven practice sessions.
“This group of players without a doubt has reported to practice in the best shape of any team I’ve coached here at Alabama,” said Green. “The work that strength coach Matt Parker has done with the team is amazing. The player’s commitment and dedication to strength and conditioning during the offseason is very evident. Their advanced physical condition has also afforded us the opportunity to be ahead of schedule in our preparation for the start of the regular season.”
Alabama returns nine letterwinners including every starter from a team that posted a 22-9 record last year. UA also welcomes a trio of solid newcomers into a mix that is looking to earn the program’s fourth consecutive winning season.
“Our returning players have set the bar extremely high on and off the court,” added Green. “They are showing a new level of intensity combined with a comfort level gained from playing together for a year. I’ve also been impressed with how quickly the newcomers have been able to pick up the different aspects of our system. All of our players are highly competitive and that is making for some very interesting practices.”
The Bama volleyball team will continue with two-a-day sessions for the remainder of this week and then settle into a normal practice routine with the start of classes at Alabama on Aug. 21. The Tide opens up the regular season on Aug. 30-31 at the Barker GMC Classic in Bloomington, Ill.
