TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Head swimming and diving coach Don Wagner announced today that Arthur Albiero, on the Tide's staff for the past three seasons, has been elevated to the post of associate head coach.
Albiero joined the Tide at the same time Wagner took over the program in the spring of 1999. During their combined tenure, Alabama has returned to upper echelon of collegiate swimming, with both the men and the women's team finishing in the top-20 last season.
"Arthur has been an invaluable part of this program since the day he arrived on campus as evidenced by the progress we have made over the last three years," Wagner said. "His commitment and dedication to Alabama warranted this promotion. He certainly has the utmost respect of the athletes, staff and coaching peers."
In addition to overseeing the Tide's middle distance and stroke athletes, Albiero helps direct all areas of the program, from recruiting to strength and conditioning.
"I am honored to have this opportunity and by the commitment the University of Alabama and the athletics department have made to the swimming and diving program," Albiero said. "We've had a steady climb with this program and I look forward to continuing that trend. Working with the top caliber athletes that we have brought to Alabama has been absolutely rewarding. I look forward to every day."
Albiero was an 18-time swimming All-American at Oakland University, leading the Pioneers to three-consecutive NCAA Division II Championships. He is married to the former Amy Comeford of Columbus, Ohio and the couple has three children, sons Estefan and Nicolas and a daughter Gabriela.
Alabama starts its season with an intrasquad meet October 5 at 4 p.m. in the Don Gambril Olympic Pool. The Tide's first dual meet comes Oct. 25 at Louisiana-Monroe.
