TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- For the second time in school history, the University of Alabama baseball team has a First-Team Academic All-America selection.
Senior right-hander Lance Cormier was one of two pitchers named to the 2002 Verizon First-Team Academic All-America squad in an announcement Tuesday morning by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Lafayette, La., native posted a 3.56 GPA in Finance and received his bachelors degree from the Capstone on May 17, 2002.
Former Alabama left fielder and current team physician Dr. Jeff Laubenthal is the only other First-Team Academic All-America winner from the Crimson Tide baseball team. Laubenthal, who won the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, was also a First-Team Academic All-America selection in 1993.
On the field, Cormier concluded his four-year tenure with four career pitching records, including appearances (87), innings pitched (384.2), wins (31) and strikeouts (289). As a senior, Cormier won 11 games for Alabama and set the single-season record with 129 innings pitched.

Hearod was Alabama’s third-leading hitter this season, compiling a .335 average with 12 home runs and 54 RBI. He hit two home runs in the Crimson Tide’s 6-5 loss to Florida Atlantic in the championship game of the Tuscaloosa Regional this past Sunday. He will return for his senior season with 21 home runs and 128 RBI in 148 career games.
To be eligible for the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average and be a sophomore in eligibility. Candidates for the All-America squad are selected from the District squads, which were announced in May.
Cormier and Hearod were both District IV Academic selections and were placed on the national ballot. The 2002 season marked the second consecutive year, Cormier and Hearod were named to the District IV First-Team. Senior center fielder Scott McClanahan was a second-team District IV selection with a 3.53 GPA in Finance. District IV consists of all schools in the state of Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan.
