TUSCALOOSA-- Fresh off their first ever appearance in the Southeastern Conference Tournament semifinals, the Alabama volleyball team will play host to several teams in a post-holiday tournament, the Turkey Classic, on Friday and Saturday.
The Crimson Tide, 21-8 overall, posted its second-straight 20-win season this year along with earning a second double-digit win total (10) in SEC play. All-SEC selections Jennifer Bibber and Erin Heffner lead a high-powered Bama offense while the Tide’s passing and defense has been the key to this year’s success.
“I’m very excited about this weekend’s tournament,” said UA head coach Judy Green. “It is nice to still be playing at this time of year. The longer we can practice and play the better I think this team becomes. This tournament will allow us to gain more experience as well as continue to work and improve on the things we are doing on our side of the net.”
The other schools participating in the inaugural Turkey Classic include Wake Forest (18-11), Arkansas State (7-19), Middle Tennessee State (9-22), Samford (12-20). Bama will face Wake Forest at 7 p.m. on Friday night in the tournament opener. Saturday’s schedule begins at 9 a.m. with Samford playing MTSU followed by Arkansas State and Samford (11:30 a.m.) and MTSU versus Wake Forest (2 p.m.). The Crimson Tide meets Arkansas State in the tournament finale at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
All the tournament matches will be played in the “CAVE” at the back of Coleman Coliseum. Admission to all events is free.
