Bama Women's Golf Opens Play at Mercedes-Benz Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Alabama women’s golf team opened up play at the Mercedes-Benz Championship with a round of 326 on Friday at the Gettysvue Polo, Golf & Country Club.
The three-day event is being hosted by the University of Tennessee at the par 72, 5,985-yard facility. The annual tournament includes a field of 15 teams.
Junior Anna Strandberg was the Tide’s low scorer on the day finishing with a four-over-par 76. Strandberg, who is currently tied for 16th-place, was two-under through 14 holes before giving a few strokes back over the finishing holes. She is the lone Crimson Tide golfer with a round in the 70s. on day one.
Other golfers competing at the Mercedes for Alabama included Allison Akin and Jenny Bouvin with rounds of 83, Darby Sligh at 84 and Mandy Tedder with an 86. The back nine at the Gettysvue proved troublesome for the Crimson Tide on Friday as the squad was a composite 37-over par on holes 10-18 after carding a solid +15 on the front side.
The Swedish Junior Nationals lead the team competition after shooting an opening round 300 on Friday. Auburn is in second at 303 with Michigan State (304), Purdue (304) and UNLV (306) rounding out the Top Five. North Carolina’s Ashley Prange, the lone golfer to finish at par or better for the first round, sits atop the individual medalist list with an even-par score of 72.
Competition at the Mercedes-Benz Championship continues throughout the weekend with 18 holes of play slated for both Saturday and Sunday.
