The University of Alabama softball program has announced that the Canadian National Softball Team will spend a week of training at the University of Alabama Softball Complex.
Canadian Head Coach Mike Renney chose the University of Alabama for an athlete evaluation camp, the first phase of team selection for the Canadian team that will represent Canada at an upcoming Olympic qualifying event in the summer of 2003.
There will be a total of 28 Canadian athletes in attendance including five members from the 2000 Canadian Olympic Team.
In addition, Crimson Tide head softball coach Patrick Murphy has been asked to participate as a hitting instructor.
“I’m very honored that Coach Renney asked me to help with his hitters,” said Murphy. “It’s a tremendous opportunity and one that I could not pass up. It’s also a great chance for us to further showcase our facilities and the university’s commitment to our softball program.”
Murphy also said that the Canadian team had a couple locations they were looking at to practice but they could not get things worked out.
The team will begin working out on Sunday, November 24 and will wrap up the week on Friday, November 29. Scrimmages will be held on Wednesday and Thursday at approximately 1:00 p.m. while workouts on Monday and Tuesday will be scheduled to begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. and going through approximately 4:30 p.m. All workouts are open to the public and the scrimmages are free of admission.
