ALABAMA AND VANDERBILT
The Alabama Crimson Tide football team (6-2, 3-1 SEC) hits the road to Tennessee for the second straight week, this time to Nashville. Alabama and Vanderbilt will meet for the 80th time with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. The Tide comes off a 34-14 win over Tennessee last weekend, while Vanderbilt (2-6, 0-4) beat Connecticut, 28-24. Alabama was ranked 12th in this week's AP poll. For the first time since 1995, the Alabama-Vanderbilt game will not be shown on network television, but will be aired on a pay-per-view basis. The game will also be aired on the 80-plus station Crimson Tide Sports Network with Eli Gold (play-by-play) and Kenny Stabler (color analyst) describing the action. Tom Roberts will once again work the sidelines for the network broadcasts.
UA IN 108th FOOTBALL SEASON
The University of Alabama is in its 108th football season and has compiled a 759-283-43 (.717) all-time record in 1,076 games. The Crimson Tide played its first football game on Nov. 11, 1892 with a 56-0 win over Birmingham High School in Birmingham. Alabama and Penn State are tied for fifth place on the all-time victory list for Division I leaders. The Crimson Tide football legacy includes 12 national championships and 21 Southeastern Conference championships. Alabama has also logged 26, 10-win seasons, the most by any Division I school. The Crimson Tide also ranks among the best in post-season play, holding the NCAA record for most bowl appearances (51) and bowl victories (29).
THE HEAD COACHES
Alabama head coach Dennis Franchione is in his second season with the Crimson Tide and is part of an elite college coaching group with 150 or more career wins. Currently, there are only seven active coaches with 150 or more career wins and Franchione joined that group following a 42-7 win over Ole Miss on Oct. 19. In his first season, Coach Fran led Alabama to a 7-5 record, including a win over Iowa State in the Mainstay Independence Bowl. He is 13-7 (.650) in his tenure with the Crimson Tide. Overall, Franchione is in his 20th season as a head coach and has compiled a 151-72-2 (.676) lifetime ledger at Southwestern (Kansas) College, Pittsburg State, Southwest Texas State, New Mexico, TCU and Alabama.
Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson, in his first season with the Commodores, is 62-42 in eight-plus seasons as a head coach. Prior to his arrival at Vanderbilt, Johnson was head coach at Furman for eight seasons where he led the Paladins to a 60-36 overall mark, a pair of Southern Conference titles and a 1-AA national runner-up finish.
THE SERIES
Alabama leads the all-time series with Vanderbilt, 57-19-4 (.728) in a series that dates back to 1904. These two SEC rivals have met every year since 1952. Since 1961, Alabama has posted a 40-2 record against Vandy. The Tide has won 17 in-a-row dating back to 1984 and has not lost in Nashville since 1969.

Game captains for the Vanderbilt game are Justin Smiley (offensive guard) and Sam Collins (split end) on offense and Kindal Moorehead (defensive end) and Waine Bacon (safety) on defense.
NEXT WEEK
Alabama returns home to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 1 p.m. game from Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will not be televised, marking the first time since 1995 (at Ole Miss) that an Alabama game has not been broadcast live by network, cable or pay-per-view television.

Playing the toughest teams in the nation is nothing new to the Alabama football program and the 2002 schedule looks to be another challenging 13-week grind.

*Alabama is 2-2 against ranked teams this season, beating No. 21 Ole Miss (42-7) and No. 15 Tennessee and losing at No. 2 Oklahoma (37-27) on Sept. 7 and to No. 6 Georgia (27-25) on Oct. 5.
*Alabama's schedule also features three defending conference champions, including Middle Tennessee State (Sun Belt co-champs), North Texas (Sun Belt co-champs) and LSU (SEC).
*ESPN.com put together a listing of the Top 10 Mid Major teams in the country and Alabama will play three of those 10 teams as part of its non-conference schedule this season. The poll lists Southern Miss (4), Hawaii (5) and Middle Tennessee (8) among the 10-best teams. The complete poll includes Marshall, Louisville, Colorado State, Southern Miss, Hawaii, Utah, Fresno State, Bowling Green, Middle Tennessee State and South Florida.
*Alabama's 2002 schedule features home games against all three Division I teams from the state of Mississippi. The Crimson Tide played Southern Miss (Sept. 21) and Ole Miss (Oct. 19) and hosts Miss. State (Nov. 9) at Bryant-Denny Stadium this season. The last time Alabama played all three Mississippi teams at home during the same season was 1981.
*The 2002 schedule contains seven teams that participated in bowl games last year, including Oklahoma (Cotton), North Texas (New Orleans), Arkansas (Cotton), Georgia (Music City), Tennessee (Citrus), LSU (Sugar) and Auburn (Peach).
*Four other teams were bowl eligible in 2001, but did not participate in post-season play. The other bowl eligible teams were Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss, Ole Miss and Hawaii.
BAMA NOTCHES 750th ALL-TIME WIN
Alabama's 34-14 win at Tennessee on Oct. 26 was the school's 750th all-time victory. Presently, Alabama ranks fifth on the all-time win list and is third in all-time winning percentage.

ALABAMA-VANDERBILT SERIES
Alabama and Vanderbilt meet for the 80th time this weekend in Nashville, with the Crimson Tide holding a 57-19-4 (.728) lead in a series that dates back to 1904. These two SEC rivals have met every year since 1952. The Commodores posted a 30-0 win over the Crimson Tide in that initial meeting in Nashville in 1904. In fact, Vandy won the first five games in the series with Alabama, outscoring the Crimson Tide, 165-14, in those five meetings. Vanderbilt also posted shutouts in each of the first three meetings, including the most-lopsided win ever against the Crimson Tide with a 78-0 win in 1906. After spotting the Commodores a 5-0 series lead, Alabama did not pick up its first series win until a 14-7 victory in Birmingham in 1920. Prior to 1960, Alabama and Vanderbilt battled on even terms, with the Crimson Tide holding a slight 17-16-4 (.514) series lead. Since 1961, Alabama has had the upperhand, posting a 40-2 (.952) record in the last 42 meetings.
Alabama enters the 2002 season with a 17-game winning streak over Vanderbilt, the Tide's longest active winning streak over any opponent. Vanderbilt has not beaten Alabama since posting a 30-21 victory over the Crimson Tide on Sept. 29, 1984 at Bryant-Denny Stadium, snapping Bama's school-record 26-game Homecoming winning streak.

BAMA-VANDY SITES
The Crimson Tide and Commodores have met at four different sites in the series 80-game history. In the state of Alabama, the teams have met in Birmingham, Mobile and Tuscaloosa. Nashville is the only Tennessee city to host the Alabama-Vanderbilt game.

ALABAMA-VANDERBILT NOTEBOOK
*Alabama and Vanderbilt are meeting for the 50th consecutive year this Saturday in Nashville.
*Alabama coach Dennis Franchione is 1-0 in his career against Vanderbilt, which happened to be his first career win with the Crimson Tide.
*The Crimson Tide posted a 12-9 win here last year on Sept. 8, 2001 giving Coach Fran his first career win as Alabama's head coach.
*Last year's win over Vanderbilt also snapped a six-game losing streak for Alabama, dating back to a 45-7 win over Ole Miss on Oct. 14, 2000. Bama lost its last five games of the 2000 season and then lost its 2001 season opener to UCLA.
*Coach Fran is the second Alabama coach in history to record his first win for the Crimson Tide against Vanderbilt. In addition to Coach Fran, former Alabama coach Gene Stallings notched his first win for the Crimson Tide with a 59-28 win on Sept. 29, 1990 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
*Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson has never faced Alabama in his coaching career.
*The first-year Vanderbilt skipper is a 1973 graduate of Clemson University, where he played football for coach Cecil "Hootie" Ingram. Ingram, who resides in Tuscaloosa, was a football and baseball standout for the Crimson Tide in the 1950s and was later the Director of Athletics for the Crimson Tide from 1989-95.
*Alabama's Director of High School Relations Randy Ross is a former Vanderbilt assistant coach. Ross served as the quarterbacks coach under Watson Brown from 1987-89 before joining the Alabama staff in 1990.
*Alabama has four players on its roster from the state of Tennessee. The list includes Dennis Alexander (OL, Memphis), Santonio Beard (TB, Nashville), Ahmaad Galloway (TB, Millington) and Kindal Moorehead (DL, Memphis).

*Vanderbilt wide receiver Dan Stricker has 10 receptions for 237 yards and one touchdown in three career games against Alabama. He is averaging 23.7 yards per catch against the Tide.
*Stricker's best game against Alabama came in 2000, where he hauled in five passes for 121 yards in a 28-10 loss.
*Stricker's lone career TD catch gave the Commodores a 17-14 lead here in Nashville in 1999, before Alabama rallied with two fourth quarter scores and a 28-17 win.
*The 2001 game marked the first time since 1958 that Alabama did not score a touchdown against Vandy. The Crimson Tide and Commodores played to a scoreless tie during the 1958 season.
*The Crimson Tide's 12-9 win over Vanderbilt last year marked the team's first win without scoring a touchdown since the 1990 season. Phillip Doyle kicked three field goals, including the 47-yard game-winner as time expired to beat Tennessee 9-6 on Oct. 20, 1990 in Knoxville.
*From 1957-59, the Crimson Tide and Commodores played to three straight ties. The scores were 6-6 (1957), 0-0 (1958) and 7-7 (1959).
*In 1998, Alabama set the school record for most safeties in a game with two against Vanderbilt in a 32-7 win at Legion Field.
*The Crimson Tide duplicated that feat with another pair of safeties in a 28-10 win during the 2000 season at Legion Field.
*Vanderbilt has scored 10 points or less in seven of the last 10 meetings against the Tide.
*Vanderbilt and Alabama have the top two single-game penalty yards in the SEC this season. The Commodores were penalized 141 yards in their loss to Middle Tennessee (Oct. 12), while the Crimson Tide was flagged for 126 yards against the Blue Raiders in the season opener (Aug. 31) at Legion Field.

Vanderbilt becomes Alabama's third opponent this season from the state of Tennessee. In addition to the Commodores, the Crimson Tide had also faced Middle Tennessee (W 39-34) and Tennessee (W 34-14).

OLD RIVALS SAY FAREWELL, FOR NOW
This is the 50th consecutive year Alabama and Vanderbilt have played each other in football. That streak will end at the conclusion of the 2002 season as the SEC realigned its football schedule and the Commodores and Crimson Tide will no longer be common opponents. Rather than meeting every year, the two teams will now meet on a rotating basis with four other teams from the Eastern Division. Tennessee will remain as Alabama's permanent non divisional opponent. Instead of playing Vanderbilt next year, Alabama will face the Kentucky Wildcats as one of its two rotating SEC Eastern Division foes. The Crimson Tide will play Georgia and Kentucky nest year, before meeting Kentucky and South Carolina in the 2004 season.
MORE SCHEDULING QUIRKS
The 2002 Alabama-Vanderbilt game features several scheduling quirks. This will be the last time the two teams are scheduled to meet as common SEC opponents, snapping the 50-year streak these two teams have met in football. Other scheduling oddities include:
*For the first time since 1991, Alabama did not open the SEC portion of its football schedule with Vanderbilt. The Commodores served as the Crimson Tide's SEC opener for 10 consecutive years from 1992-2001 before being replaced this season by Arkansas on Sept. 28 in Fayetteville. The Crimson Tide defeated the Razorbacks 30-12 at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium for its 11th consecutive win in SEC openers. The last loss was a 35-0 defeat at Florida on Sept. 14, 1991.
*Alabama and Vanderbilt are meeting in Nashville for the second consecutive season. The Crimson Tide posted a 12-9 win over the Commodores on Sept. 8, 2001 here at Vanderbilt Stadium, marking the first win in the Dennis Franchione era of Alabama football. The back-to-back meetings at Vanderbilt Stadium marks the first time since 1904-06 the Crimson Tide has played consecutive seasons in Nashville. Alabama and Vanderbilt met two straight times in Nashville in 1951 and 1953, but the two teams did not face each other during the 1952 season.
*With a Nov. 2 playing date, this the latest Alabama and Vanderbilt have met since Nov. 16, 1946 when the Crimson Tide posted a 12-7 win at Legion Field.
*From 1947-71, Alabama and Vanderbilt met either the first or second weekend in October. From 1971-2001, the two teams met in the month of September.
BAMA OWNS 17-GAME WINNING STREAK
Alabama has won the last 17 on-the-field meetings with Vanderbilt, dating back to the 1984 season.The Crimson Tide did forfeit its 17-6 win over the Commodores in 1993 due to NCAA sanctions.

TIDE STREAKING IN NASHVILLE, TOO
Alabama has won the last 16 meetings with the Commodores at Vanderbilt Stadium, dating back to the 1969 season. Quarterback Watson Brown engineered a 14-10 upset over Alabama on Oct. 11, 1969. The win was Vandy's first in the series since a 32-7 win in Mobile during the 1956 season.
*Alabama had its 14-game winning streak at Vanderbilt Stadium with a 38-7 loss to Virginia Tech in the Dec. 28, 1998 Music City Bowl, the only year the bowl was played on Vanderbilt's campus.

ALABAMA PLAYER STATS (Vanderbilt)
Here is a look at how the current Crimson Tide roster has fared statistically against the Commodores.
*Strong safety Waine Bacon made his first career start last year against Vanderbilt. He finished the game with four tackles and one pass breakup.
*Rover Brooks Daniels recorded 12 tackles in last year's win at Vanderbilt, his first career double-digit tackle game.
*Senior tailback Ahmaad Galloway was lost for the season with torn ACL and MCL in the Crimson Tide's win over Southern Miss on Sept. 21, 2002. The loss was a big blow to the Crimson Tide offense and will be magnified this weekend as some of his better career games against the Commodores.
*In two career games, Galloway averaged 163 yards per game, including a career-high 172 yards and one TD in a 28-10 win at Legion Field in 2000.
*In the 2000 win, Galloway ran 13 times for 172 yards, including a career-long 79 yard TD run on the second play from scrimmage for the Crimson Tide.
*Antwan Odom recorded two tackles in last year's game at Vanderbilt before suffering a season-ending injury. Odom was granted a medical redshirt and including this season has three years to play for the Crimson Tide.
*Tight end Theo Sanders made his first career start and hauled in his first career reception in last year's win at Vanderbilt. Sanders' 26-yard reception in the fourth quarter set up the Crimson Tide's game-winning FG in a 12-9 win.
*Alabama quarterback Tyler Watts scored his first career rushing touchdown in the Crimson Tide's 28-10 win over the Commodores on Sept. 9, 2000 at Legion Field.
ROAD RECORD
Following the 34-14 win over Tennessee on Oct. 26, Alabama has compiled a 220-112-12 (.657) all-time record in 344 road games. Under Coach Fran, Alabama is 4-3 (.571) in road games, winning at Vanderbilt and Auburn last year and at Arkansas and Tennessee in 2002. The Crimson Tide is 2-1 on the road this season, dropping a 37-27 decision at No. 2 Oklahoma on Sept. 7 and then picking up wins at at Arkansas and Tennessee. The above record does not include neutral site games, bowl games or the Alabama-Auburn game played at Legion Field from 1948-88.
*Historically Alabama has been a strong road team. From 1970-75, Alabama won a school record 21 consecutive road games. From 1970-82, Alabama was 35-6 (.854) in road games.
*Since 1982, Alabama is 56-27-1 (.673) on the road.
*Coach Fran is the only coach in the history of Alabama football to record his first career win on the road. Coach Fran's first win at Alabama was a 12-9 victory at Vanderbilt on Sept. 8, 2001.

ROAD WARRIORS
In addition to seven home games this season, the Crimson Tide will also play six road games in 2002, matching the school record for most road games. Alabama played six road games in 1946. The Crimson Tide posted a 2-4 (.333) away from home that year, including losses at Tennessee (12-0), Georgia (14-0), LSU (31-21) and Boston College (13-7). Alabama's Nov. 23 trip to Boston marked the first time the Crimson Tide football team traveled by plane. The game was also contested at historic Braves Field.
*The 2002 season marks the first time since 1941 that Alabama will play at Vanderbilt and Tennessee in the same season. The Crimson Tide played at Knoxville on Oct. 26 and at Nashville on Nov. 2.
*The 2002 season also marks the first time since 1991 that Alabama will not play at least one game in the state of Mississippi.
*Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, LSU and Hawaii were a combined 26-8 (.765) at home last year.
*Oklahoma entered the 2002 season with a 17-1 (.944) record at home under Bob Stoops. The Sooners' 17-game winning streak was snapped with a 16-13 loss to rival Oklahoma State on Nov. 24, 2001.
*Arkansas entered to the Alabama game with a 25-3 record at home under Houston Nutt. The Crimson Tide's 30-12 win over the Razorbacks snapped Arkansas' eight-game home winning streak.
*Alabama also has a three-game losing streak at Tennessee prior to this year's 34-14 victory. The Tide had not beaten the Vols in Knoxville since 1994.
*The Crimson Tide lost at LSU in 2000, snapping a 15-game unbeaten streak against the Tigers in Baton Rouge. Prior to the 2000 season, Alabama had not lost in Tiger Stadium since 1969.
NOVEMBER RECORD
Alabama has compiled a 244-112-14 (.678) all-time record in the month of November. The Crimson Tide enters the 2002 season riding a three-game winning streak in the month of November, posting wins over Miss. State, Auburn and Southern Miss last season.
*Alabama and Vanderbilt are meeting in the month of November for the first time since 1946.
*Prior to 1946, Alabama and Vanderbilt met 20 times in the month of November, with the Crimson Tide holding a 14-6 lead in those games.
*For nine consecutive years (1931-39), Alabama and Vanderbilt met on Thanksgiving Day.
*The Crimson Tide has a three-game winning streak over the Commodores in the month of November and has won eight of the last nine November meetings with Vandy dating back to 1936.

Nov. 11, 1892 -- Alabama defeated Birmingham High School 56-0 in the first-ever Crimson Tide football game.
Nov. 4, 1922 -- Alabama's 9-7 win over Penn in Philadelphia was a landmark win for the Crimson Tide and put Southern football on the map nationally.
Nov. 14, 1925 -- Alabama defeated Florida 34-0 in Montgomery for the school's 150th all-time football win.
Nov. 23, 1946 -- The Crimson Tide suffered a 13-7 loss to Boston College at Braves Field in Boston. The Boston College game was the first time the Alabama team traveled in an airplane to a football game.
Nov. 14, 1981 -- Alabama's 31-16 win at Penn State was Coach Bryant's 314th career win, tying Amos Alonzo Stagg as the all-time winningest football coach.
Nov. 28, 1981 -- Bryant became college football's all-time winningest coach, leading Alabama to a 28-17 win over Auburn at Legion Field.
Nov. 13, 1982 -- Southern Miss defeated Alabama, 38-29, at Bryant-Denny Stadium to snap the Crimson Tide's NCAA record 57-game home winning streak. The game also marked the last Tuscaloosa home game for legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.
Nov. 12, 1983 -- Alabama notched its 600th all-time football win with a 28-16 victory over Southern Miss at Legion Field.
Nov. 11, 1989 -- Alabama picked up its 650th all-time win with a 32-16 victory over LSU in Baton Rouge.
Nov. 9, 1996 -- Shaun Alexander ran for an Alabama record 291 yards and scored four TDs as the Crimson Tide blanked LSU 26-0 in Baton rouge.
Nov. 23, 1996 -- Dennis Riddle's six-yard TD reception from Freddie Kitchens with less than one-minute to play in the game gave Gene Stalling s a 24-23 win over Auburn in his final regular-season game as UA's head coach.
Nov. 20, 1999 -- All-America tailback Shaun Alexander rushed for 100 yards and three TDs in the fourth quarter, leading Alabama to a 28-17 win over arch-rival Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Crimson Tide's first-ever win on the Plains also clinched the 1999 SEC Western Division championship.
