University of Alabama All-American softball player Jackie McClain was honored Saturday as the recipient of the first ever WVUA 90.7 SGA Female Student Athlete of the Year. The junior first baseman from Soddy Daisy, Tennessee earned the award based on her performance during the 2002 softball season, her sophomore season.
“It’s an honor,” McClain said. “I thought the award was a really cool thing to receive. I didn’t even know you could earn an honor like this.”
A two-time All-American, McClain led the 2002 Crimson Tide softball team in seven statistical categories including home runs and RBIs.
For WVUA assistant sports director and play by play announcer Jarrod Shadrick, the choice was an easy one.
“Jackie’s a great player,” Shadrick said. “She’s been an All-American both years she has been here and probably will be the next two years as well.”
The award was created as a way for WVUA to say thanks.
“We just wanted to give something back,” Shadrick said. “We wanted a way to show our appreciation to those who have helped us out.”
Last season was the first season in which WVUA 90.7, the campus radio station run by students, broadcast Alabama softball.
McClain and her teammates will open the 2003 season January 31st in Los Angeles, California at the Stacey Winsberg Memorial Tournament.
