TUSCALOOSA – Mark Gottfried put his University of Alabama men's basketball team through its first full intra squad scrimmage on Friday afternoon and was pleased with the progress the team is making as it ends its first week of practice.
The scrimmage consisted of two games. Sophomore point guard Mo Williams scored a total of 32 points in the two scrimmages, including 24 points in the first. He also had a total of 17 assists for the day. Senior forward/center Kenny Walker also had a strong showing, scoring 16 points in the second game.
"Kenny has been impressive to me," said Gottfried of Walker's fall. "Not that the other guys haven't. The other guys have been impressive as well. But if I was going to pull a guy out who has stood out, it would be Kenny Walker. He's really done a great job.
"The thing with our team is the guys kind of know their strengths, their weaknesses. We have a number of returning players and they know their roles from last year. The new guys seem like they are learning and blending in, so I think so far it's going pretty good."
Stats from the afternoon found Williams averaging 16 points in the two games, Walker averaging 12.0 points, freshman Kennedy Winston averaging 8 points, freshman Chuck Davis averaging 5.5 points, Erwin Dudley averaging 5.0 points and 4.5 rebounds, Earnest Shelton averaging 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds, Terrance Meade 3.5 points, and Reggie Rambo averaging 3.0 points.
"Mo Williams has been shooting the ball really well. He's shooting with a lot of confidence and making a lot of shots. And, really, Terrance Meade, Earnest Shelton, Demetrius Smith, Antoine Pettway, all of those guys have shot the ball in practice pretty well."
Basketball fans can meet Alabama's players and coaches on Saturday morning at Coleman Coliseum. They'll be signing autographs for fans, then, at 10:30 a.m. the players will entertain with some drills, a 3-point shooting contest where the Tide men's and women's players team together and compete, and a light scrimmage. Admission is free.
