Rebecca Westfall joined the Alabama swimming and diving staff as an assistant coach in the summer of 2019.
“Rebecca is a great motivator and technician who brings a lot to the deck for us,” UA head coach Coley Stickels said.
Westfall’s first season with the Crimson Tide proved to be nothing short of phenomenal with Alabama qualifying 24 student-athletes for the NCAA Championships and 22 swimmers and divers earning a total of 57 All-America honors. Alabama also won a league-best nine SEC titles, set SEC records in four different events and broke 23 school records over the five days of the 2020 SEC Championships.
“From the new world-class facilities to the amazing resources to the staff Coley has assembled, Alabama truly has all the pieces in place to continue its climb among the elite programs in the SEC and the NCAA,” Westfall said.
Westfall joined the Alabama staff following two years at Pittsburgh. During her time at Pitt, the Panthers broke 29 school records and rose in the ranks of the ACC. Westfall spent the 2016-17 season as an assistant coach for the inaugural swimming & diving program at Indiana State.
Prior to Indiana State, Westfall coached two seasons with UNC Asheville, helping the Bulldogs post program-best finishes in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships in both seasons. She also coached two seasons at Warren Wilson College in Swannona, N.C. and served as interim head coach and aquatics director at Emory & Henry College in Emory, Va., in 2011-12.
She began her full-time coaching career at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo., serving as the director of swimming and aquatics for two years. During that time, Westfall established ASC’s first women’s program and reestablished the men’s team for the first time since the 1970’s.
A biomechanics and swimming technique specialist, Westfall has published a series of articles on kinetic energy and movement through water.
A former eight-time All-American and nine-time Big 12 Conference champion at Texas A&M from 2003-07, Westfall helped the Aggies win their first Big 12 team title in 2007.
After her senior season, Westfall spent her final year in College Station as a student assistant coach for the Aggies, graduating in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management while minoring in history and business.
Rebecca and her husband James have a son, Wade.
