Lance McMahon joined the Alabama Softball coaching staff in the fall of 2022.

"We are very excited to welcome Lance to the Alabama softball family," UA Head Coach Patrick Murphy said. "He has done great things at Illinois and we look forward to having him work with our pitchers. His experiences in Champaign and at LSU, Mizzou and the NPF have more than prepared him for this position."

McMahon arrives in Tuscaloosa following six seasons at the University of Illinois. The Illini pitching staff recorded sub 3.00 team ERAs in each of the last three seasons, culminating in a 2.50 campaign in 2022, its lowest team ERA since 2010. The pitchers also struck out a single season record 428 batters in 2022, beating the previous record that had stood since 2001. The Illini ranked in the top three in the Big 10 in ERA, saves, strikeouts, batting average against and shutouts.

"First, I would like to thank Illinois Head Coach Tyra Perry for giving me the opportunity to help elevate Illini softball during our six-year run in Champaign-Urbana," McMahon said. "I'm so thankful for everything she has done for my life, not only professionally but personally as well. I look forward to her continued friendship and mentorship.

"Having degrees from two different SEC member institutions, it was always my dream to coach in the SEC and I would like to thank Alabama Head Coach Patrick Murphy for making that dream a reality. It was clear from our early conversations that we had similar values and are invested in building relationships in pursuit of competitive excellence both on and off the field for our student-athletes. It is my absolute privilege to join the rest of the staff here and compete in the best softball conference in the country."

Prior to his time at Illinois, McMahon was a graduate assistant at LSU, helping the Tigers to a pair of Women's College World Series appearances. He began his collegiate softball career as a student manager as his alma mater, the University of Missouri, from 2010-13 where the Tigers earned a Big 12 Championship and an appearance at the Women's College World Series.

In addition to his collegiate experience, McMahon was the pitching coach for the Chicago Bandits in the National Pro Fastpitch League in the summer of 2019, winning the NPF regular season title and earning 2019 Coaching Staff of the Year honors alongside head coach Lauren Lappin and assistant Amber Flores. He also was the pitching coach for the Wichita Mustangs organization (2014-15) and a volunteer assistant at Knox County High School (2010-14).
