Walk Through Metal Detector FAQ
Why is The University of Alabama implementing metal detectors?
UA is implementing the walk-through metal detectors to enhance our safety procedures at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Coleman Coliseum (Men's Basketball and Gymnastics), Sewell-Thomas Stadium (Baseball) and Rhoads Stadium (Softball). This is an effort to make sure that our fans, student-athletes, coaches and game day personnel can enjoy the games in a safe environment.
Have there been any prior threats made against Alabama Athletic Events?
No. Like many stadiums, UA is implementing the walk-through metal detectors as a way to enhance safety procedures. Metal detectors are already mandatory at NFL and MLB stadiums, and they are in use at other college stadiums around the country.
How much extra time should fans allow for entry into events?
The large number of metal detectors set up at various athletic events should keep the wait times to 5-10 minutes depending on the time of entrance. However, we are encouraging fans to arrive about 30 minutes earlier than normal to help with smooth foot traffic flows.
Will there be a metal detector at every gate?
Yes. Depending on the facility, all fan entrances will be utilizing detectors to screen fans entering the building. Additionally, handheld wands will be utilized to screen individuals in some locations and to speed up the entrance process. This will ensure that fans can quickly enter the stadium.
How will the process work once a fan approaches the metal detector?
Fans are asked to follow the instructions of the gate security personnel. Touchless walk-through metal detectors are used at all gates. Fans will not need to remove any items (including belts, wallets, watches, jewelry, coins, jackets, cell phones or keys) from their pockets or bags. Please proceed through the detectors at a normal pace. If additional screening is necessary, security staff will ask the individual to proceed to a secondary screening area, where they will be asked to divest themselves of certain items and pass through again until clear. Those who have prohibited items will have to dispose of them or return those items to their cars before entering the facility.

What happens to individuals who cannot walk through a metal detector due to a medical condition?
According to the manufacturer, walkthrough metal detectors in use at Bryant-Denny Stadium have been tested and approved by all appropriate authorities for human exposure of electromagnetic fields; this includes pregnant women, those having implantable medical devices and magnetic media. However, if a fan has a medical condition and doesn't feel comfortable passing through the metal detector, they can identify their need to gate security personnel and will be offered alternative screening.
Does the clear bag policy remain in effect with the addition of the metal detectors?
Yes, the clear bag policy will still be in effect at all events. To expedite the screening process, it is recommended that fans use their approved clear bag to carry all approved items. Each clear bag will be inspected by gate security staff at each metal detector.
What facilities will implement walk through metal detectors?
Metal detector screening will take place at Bryant-Denny Stadium, Coleman Coliseum, Sewell-Thomas Stadium and Rhoads Stadium. Please plan on using the detectors for all football, men's basketball, women's basketball, gymnastics, baseball and softball events.
