Slovenia will advance to the next round of the Davis Cup, set to be played in September
VELENJE, Slovenia – Alabama's Filip Planinsek captured a singles victory in the opening round of the Davis Cup to propel Slovenia to a 4-0 win over Indonesia.
The 2024 NCAA Singles Champion downed his opponent Muhammad Rifqi Fitriadi in two sets, dropping just four games along the way. Planinsek cruised to a 6-1 victory in the opening set, before taking a 6-3 second set win for the overall victory.
"A great honor and opportunity for both Filip and Matic (Kriznik)," head coach George Husack said. "Well-earned and so special to represent their country. This will be the first of many appearances they make for Slovenia and we're proud to call them family here too at Alabama."
Slovenia would win two more singles matches and a doubles match to advance in the tournament.
Both Planinsek and Matic Kriznik missed the Crimson Tide's home matches against Tulsa, Middle Tennessee and Alabama A&M to compete in the elite tournament for their home country of Slovenia.
