Alabama posts a 96 overall GSR for second consecutive year with 11 Crimson Tide teams earning top marks in the SEC
INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Alabama matched its all-time high in overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 96 percent, a record that was set last year, in the most recent numbers that were released by the NCAA on Wednesday. With that, Alabama is tied for tops among all Southeastern Conference schools and is seventh-best among NCAA Power Five public institutions.
A total of 15 Crimson Tide athletics programs scored 90-or-better, with 10 earning perfect 100s. A total of 11 teams lead the SEC in their respective sport in 2024-25 GSR figures, including the 10 teams that scored 100. Football's score of 98 not only is the best in the SEC but also ranks as the highest GSR in program history and ranks fifth overall in the nation. Only Long Island, Harvard, Northwestern and Wake Forest football programs scored higher.
The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions. GSR is believed to be a more accurate measure of academic performance in athletics departments as it holds schools responsible for student-athletes transferring into the institutions and allows them to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation but are otherwise academically eligible to compete.
The average GSR for all NCAA Division I student-athletes is 90. This year's GSR spans the period covering student-athletes who enrolled at the University during 2015-18.
Mike Ward, Deputy Director of Athletics, Compliance and Academic Support
"Credit goes to our student-athletes, the talented and selfless staff of the Bill Battle Academic Center, our athletics administration, our coaches, and our campus partners for fostering a culture of academic excellence. This year's GSR is more remarkable when considering the time represented spans both the pandemic and the advent of the transfer portal. A thousand small actions are taken every day that by themselves are barely noticeable but collectively yield exceptional results. Today's scores validate that philosophy and we're proud to share them with the University community."
