The Crimson Tide defeated Georgia Tech, 5-2, before topping Alabama State, 4-0, to capture a 2-0 start to the season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 19 Alabama men's tennis team (2-0) opened the season with a pair of wins, defeating Georgia Tech (1-1) in a 5-2 victory before capturing a 4-0 win over Alabama State (1-3).
Roan Jones would claim the deciding point in both matches, while Filip Planinsek and Andrii Zimnokh also boasted a pair of singles wins to start the season. Jones would also go undefeated in doubles action as he and partner Matias Ponce De Leon found wins against both the Yellow Jackets and Hornets.

"A very good start-to-finish kind of day. We were tested in all matches and we executed very well. We had a great crowd on hand and the atmosphere was electric. Nice to have Filip and Enzo (Aguiard) back and Roan embraced his move up to the second line like a champ. Plenty to work on and improve while also plenty to be proud of and keep moving forward."
Match Notes vs. Georgia Tech
- Georgia Tech recorded the first victory of the day, taking a 6-3 win on court 2, but Roan Jones and Matias Ponce De Leon battled to a 6-3 victory on court three to even the attempt for the doubles point
- After trailing 6-2 in the tiebreaker, Filip Planinsek and Enzo Aguiard won four-straight points for a 6-6 tiebreak score against the Yellow Jackets' No. 1 and 19th-nationally ranked doubles team of Krish Arora and Christophe Clement
- The two doubles teams would trade points before Aguiard and Planinsek captured the ninth and 10th point to secure the opening team point for the Tide
- Georgia Tech found its first point moments later with a victory on court four
- Ponce De Leon, however, pushed Alabama back in front with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court three against Christophe Clement
- Andrii Zimnokh followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court five against Gianluca Carlini to move the Tide to match point before Jones clinched the deciding point in a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 victory
- Planinsek would add to the Tide's victory with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at the top of the lineup to go undefeated in his first match since returning from competing professionally in the fall
Match Notes vs. Alabama State
- Finishing just seconds apart, the No. 2 doubles pairing of Damien Nezar and Andrii Zimnokh and the No. 3 pairing of Roan Jones and Matias Ponce De Leon secured wins to give UA a 1-0 advantage
- Nezar and Zimnokh defeated Matteo Lataste and David Jeanne Grandinot 6-2, while Jones and Ponce De Leon topped Gordan Fran Mileusni and Lun Obrul 6-3
- Planinsek dropped just two games in his 6-1, 6-1 victory over Grandinot at No. 1 singles
- Just like the match before, Andrii Zimnokh moved the Tide to match point before, once again, Roan Jones clinched the match
- Zimnokh defeated Mileusni 6-3, 6-1 on court five as Jones downed Alexandre Verlaguet 6-0, 6-3 on court 2

- Alabama will head to Charlottesville, Va., to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend
- The Tide will open the tournament against VCU on Jan. 25, before playing either Boise State or Virginia on Jan. 26
