TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – How far can a limit, truly, be pushed? For Alabama gymnastics assistant coach Justin Spring, it is a hypothesis he is always seeking to test, especially in the gym as he lives out his dream.
Prior to the start of the 2024-25 athletics season, we caught up with Spring for a Q&A in the second installment of our series, Get to Know the Alabama Gymnastics Coaching Staff.
Get to Know: Assistant Coach Justin Spring
What drew you to the sport of gymnastics?
I think it was the only sport that allowed me to push the limits indefinitely. You never stop learning new skills in gymnastics. When you learn a double back, it's time to learn a triple back. I've always been one to push the edge to find out how to be great at something; I was able to do that the most in gymnastics.
What was the best piece of advice you received from one of your coaches?
Your comfort is always in competition with your calling. Greatness takes a very high tolerance for discomfort.
What do you hope to instill to the current Alabama gymnasts?
The capacity to take on hard and difficult moments in the and outside the gym. The skills and tools you need to fight through a tough week of practice are also the ones that will serve you throughout your life. That is how you win championships, and that is how you transition out of college ready to get what you want in the real world.
What are you most excited about for the 2025 season?
All of it! The experience of navigating an NCAA season with a team is one of the greatest things to be a part of. I'm, truly, living my dream as an NCAA coach.
You're stranded on a deserted island and are only allowed one other coaching staff member to help you survive – who are you picking and why?
Based on a variety of experiences, I think Ross and I could get it done. Finding food, building shelter seeking out clean water... All the above. We would also have a great time doing it... but, we would miss the rest of the staff tremendously!
