
Alabama’s Kristian Gkolomeev Earns a Fifth-Place Finish at Paris Olympics

The Greek sprinter used his best 50m freestyle time at the Paris Olympics to propel him to a fifth-place finish
PARIS – Former Alabama swimmer Kristian Gkolomeev used a season and meet-best time of 21.59 to tie his all-time best Olympic finish on Friday as the Greek swimmer placed fifth in the 50m freestyle.
Gkolomeev improved his time and placement during all three rounds of competition. He opened the Olympics with a time of 21.86 for an eighth-place finish in the heats portion of the meet, before dropping over two tenths of a second in the semifinals to clock a 21.62 for seventh place. Gkolomeev's time of 21.59 in the finals was just three hundredths of a second shy of a medal.
Gkolomeev is making his fourth Olympic appearance, competing in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Games. His fifth-place finish in Paris tied his career-best finish of fifth in the 50m freestyle at Tokyo 2020.
