Planinsek Qualifies for ATP Next Gen Accelerator Program

Filip Planinsek is one of 11 collegiate players who is eligible to compete in the main draw at ATP Challenger events around the world
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –– Alabama's Filip Planinsek was one of 21 collegiate athletes that qualified for the ATP Next Gen Accelerator and one of just 11 that was guaranteed a spot in the main draw of six ATP Challenger Tour events.
Planinsek earned his spot in the prestigious program after claiming the NCAA Singles Championship in May. He will receive six opportunities to compete over the next six months (July-December) before returning to the Capstone in the spring for his senior season.
Players ranked in the top 20 of the ITA final singles rankings, who have finished their education are granted up to eight Accelerator spots at Challenger 50 and 75 tournaments while players still finishing their degrees are granted six spots, with opportunities split between main draw (for Top 10 ITA ranked players) and qualifying (11-20). Players who reach the quarterfinals or better of the individual NCAA Division I Championships also qualify for the ATP Next Gen Accelerator if not already eligible through their ITA ranking.
Filip Planinsek's Resume
- Won the NCAA Singles Championship, recording the Crimson Tide's first-ever singles title in program history
- Named an ITA All-America honoree, becoming the eighth player in program history to achieve the feat in singles
- Concluded the season on a seven-match winning streak which included defeating six consecutive ranked opponents in the NCAA Tournament
- His victories in the NCAA Tournament included wins over No. 118 Jonas Hartenstein (North Florida) in the opening match, No. 17 Cannon Kingsley (Ohio State) in the Round of 32, No. 5 Micah Braswell (Round of 16), No. 15 Cooper Williams (Harvard) in the quarterfinals, No. 9 Ozan Baris (Michigan State) in the semifinals and No. 23 Michael Zheng (Columbia) in the finals
- Concluded the season with a 27-13 overall record in singles and held a national ranking in 19 consecutive ITA singles polls, dating back to March 21, 2023
- Won the ITA Southern Regional Doubles Title in the fall
- Two-time SEC Player of the Week for his performance at the ITA National Indoor Championships (Feb. 21) and against Ole Miss and then-No. 11 Texas A&M (April 15)
