Thomas Ponder leads the Crimson Tide carding a score of 1-under par through the first 18 holes
FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The No. 9 Alabama men's golf team is in 10th place after the opening 18 holes at the Mason Rudolph Championship which was played Friday. The Crimson Tide opened the three-day, 54-hole event with a team score of 8-over 292.
Thomas Ponder continued his hot play as of late, finishing the day in a tie for eighth place overall with a 1-under par 70 on the par 71, 7,112-yard Vanderbilt Legends South Course.
Round One Highlights
- Thomas Ponder was the only UA golfer to card below par through the first 18 holes and is the only one to finish the day inside the top 10
- Jones Free carded a 2-over 73 and is in a tie for 32nd overall
- JP Cave is a stroke back in a tie for 41st with a 3-over 74, while Canon Claycomb finished at 4-over par 75
- Jonathan Griz (81) rounds out Alabama's starting five in 72nd position overall
- Austin Coggin and Luke Coyle are also competing in the event as individuals with both ending the day inside the top-25 individuals
- Coggin closed the day carding an even par and tied for 15th position overall
- Coyle finished round one at 1-over par 72 and tied for 20th overall
Team Highlights
- No. 3 Vanderbilt (-8) holds the opening round clubhouse lead by seven shots over UNCW (-1)
- Charlotte (E), Middle Tennessee State (+1) and No. 5 Ole Miss (+1) round out the top five teams in the event, respectively
- Alabama will tee off the second round beginning at 10:44 a.m. CT on hole No. 10 and is paired alongside Kentucky and Northern Illinois
