
Bencheikh, Nelson Earn SEC Women’s Tennis Weekly Honors

Bencheikh received Player of the Week, while Nelson is named Freshman of the Week
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two Alabama women's tennis players, Loudmilla Bencheikh and Priya Nelson, earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors, after leading the Crimson Tide to the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic title for the first time since 2015.
Bencheikh earned Player of the Week for the first time this season, while Nelson also earned her first honor after being named Freshman of the Week. The two's performances led then-No. 35 Alabama to wins over three ranked teams, including then-No. 42 Arizona (4-3), then-No. 24 Illinois (4-1) and then-No. 22 Texas Tech (4-2).
No. 31 Bencheikh won two of her three singles matches, including a three-set victory to clinch the match over then-No. 24 Illinois' Megan Heuser (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) after the junior fell behind in the first set. The junior defeated No. 59 Cristina Tiglea of then-No. 22 Texas Tech also in three-sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-0) during the Tide's come-from-behind victory over the Red Raiders for the title.
Nelson played a huge role in Alabama's 4-2 win over then-No. 22 Texas Tech after filling the sixth spot in the lineup during the last match of the weekend to clinch her singles match against Jermine Sherif, 7-5, 7-6(5), which finalized the title for the Tide.
- The 37th-nationally ranked doubles duo, Bencheikh and Anne Marie Hiser, won two-out-of-three doubles matches during the tournament
- No. 31 Bencheikh defeated No. 59 Cristina Tiglea (TTU) to earn her sixth victory over a ranked opponent
- No. 31 Bencheikh clinched the match for Alabama over then-No. 24 Illinois
- Nelson clinched her singles match, which secured the championship title for the Tide
- Received her first SEC honor of her career
