ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Alabama track and field program saw two of its alumni earn gold-medal-finishes at the 2024 USA Track and Field Indoor Championships, as Daniel Haugh finished first in the men's weight throw and Shelby McEwen defended his USATF indoor high jump title.
On March 4, 1995, two months before Haugh was born, American Lance Deal set the world standard in the men's weight throw via a 25.86-meter (84-10) performance. Fast forward 28 years, Haugh's stepped up for his fourth attempt in the event at the 2024 USATF Indoor Championships and launched a blistering 26.35-meter (86-5.50) throw to obliterate Deal's original mark.
Over on the runway, McEwen arrived to New Mexico as the reigning indoor champion in the men's high jump. With only three athletes remaining, McEwen soared over the 2.28-meter threshold (7-5.75) to successfully defend his title from a year ago.
