
Alves, Petkova Set Records on Opening Day of World Aquatic Championships

Kaique Alves topped the South American record in the 4x100m freestyle relay while Diana Petkova downed Bulgaria’s 200m medley time
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Alabama's Kaique Alves and Diana Petkova highlighted the opening day of the World Aquatic Championships, setting a South American and Bulgarian record, respectively.
Alves, alongside Brazil's 4x100m freestyle relay team, captured an impressive 3:04.84 time, aided by a 45.82 split from the UA senior. Brazil would go on to finish fifth in the event.
Petkova put together a 2:09.50 swim in the 200m medley to set a Bulgarian record in the event. She would drop over two seconds off her prior national record of 2:11.26 in the event. Petkova finished 17th overall during Tuesday's competition.
Former Alabama alum Victor Johansson (Sweden) placed 10th in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 14:34.37, while Toni Dragoja helped the Croatian 4x100 freestyle relay team to a seventh-place finish and a time of 3:05.56.
