
Alabama Vaults Inside the Top-10 after Strong Second Round at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships

The Crimson Tide closed second round action at 2-over par 282, eight shots better than round one, to end the day in a tie for ninth overall
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The No. 15-ranked Alabama men's golf team vaulted eight spots up the leaderboard on moving day at the 2023 NCAA Championships, finishing second round action on Saturday with a team total of 2-over par 282. With an eight-shot improvement from its round one score of 10-over par 290, the Crimson Tide will enter Sunday's action in a tie for ninth overall with a 36-hole total of 12-over 572.
The NCAA Championships, which are being held at the par 70, 7,289-yard Grayhawk Golf Club, will continue with 18 holes Sunday. The 30-team field will be trimmed to the top 15 teams following Sunday's third round of play and cut to eight teams following Monday's final 18 holes of action.
Alabama will be among the morning wave of teams to tee off Sunday, going off Hole No. 10 beginning at 9:27 a.m. CT (7:27 a.m. PT). The Crimson Tide will be paired alongside SEC rivals Auburn and Texas A&M.
Individual Highlights
- Three Crimson Tide golfers finished the day inside the top-25 individuals as Canon Claycomb (72-70), Nick Dunlap (74-68) and Jonathan Griz (72-70) are tied for 24th overall with each shooting 142
- The trio all carded rounds of par or better to lead Alabama in round two
- It was Claycomb's team-leading 26th round of par or better (out of 35 rounds played on the year)
- Meanwhile, Dunlap's 68 on Saturday was his team-leading 16th round in the 60s this season, and the lowest by any UA golfer in championship play
- Griz continued his solid play this spring by collecting his ninth round of par or better across the last 11 rounds he has played
- Griz has 26 pars through two rounds played which leads the Tide and ranks tied for XXX-most in the field
- Dunlap and Claycomb lead Alabama with six birdies across the 36 holes played
- JP Cave is in a tie for 67th position at 6-over par 146 (72-74), while Thomas Ponder is in 108th overall with a 149 (75-74)

NCAA Men's Golf Championship Round Two Highlights
- Alabama improved eight spots after ending round one in a tie for 17th overall
- The Tide is fourth in the 30-team field in par 4 scoring average (+12, 4.10) and eighth in total birdies (25)
- No. 3 Illinois (-2) had the round of the championship so far with a team score of 7-under par 273 Saturday to take the overall lead
- No. 9 Florida (+1) is in second place, five shots better than No. 2 North Carolina (+6) and No. 11 Georgia Tech (+6)
- Remaining top-10 teams including No. 8 Pepperdine (+8), No. 1 Vanderbilt (+10), No. 7 Florida State (+11), No. 16 Virginia (+11), No. 4 Arizona State (+12) and the Crimson Tide
- The championships will be contested on Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course for the third and final year, as the Tom Fazio-designed course will play as a 7,289-yard par 70 trek throughout tournament action
