
Alabama Swimmers Named to SEC Community Service Team

Swimmers Derek Maas and Kensey McMahon were named to the 2023 team for their work within the community
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama swimmers Derek Maas and Kensey McMahon were named to the Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Men's and Women's Community Service Teams, the league office announced Tuesday. The SEC Community Service teams highlight a student-athlete from each school who gives back to their community with superior service efforts.
An SEC Champion, All-American and school record holder, Maas earned the honor for the first time in his career. The senior serves as an executive board member of UA's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In addition to his time spend with SAAC, Maas taught English as a second language (ESL) as an intern with the Shelton State Community College ESL program. During the spring semester of 2022, Maas also volunteered as a medical interpreter. He recently earned the 2022 Distinguished Undergraduate Scholar Award, which is awarded to graduating seniors who have received all A's or A+'s throughout their career. Maas has also made Alabama's President's List each semester of his undergraduate career, which is awarded to students with a 4.0 GPA each semester.
A World Championships medalist, SEC Champion, All-American and school record holder, McMahon earned the honor for the first time in her career. The graduate student serves as an executive board member of UA's SAAC and is currently chair of campus collaboration. McMahon's role as chair, includes serving as the campaign manager / public relations coordinator as the athlete representative for all homecoming activities. During her time with SAAC, she has worked with the annual Halloween Extravaganza, Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive and has volunteered with local area elementary schools. McMahon is also an active mentor with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of West Alabama and an active member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Additionally, McMahon serves as coordinator for UA's adapted athletics events.
The Crimson Tide began the 2023 SEC Championships in College Station, Texas, Tuesday night with a win in the women's 200 medley relay and a third-place finish in the men's 800 freestyle relay. The meet continues Wednesday and will conclude Saturday. All sessions will be streamed on SEC Network+ with live results available on the MeetMobile app.
