Alabama Drops First Game of the 2023-24 Season in a 68-58 Loss Against Gonzaga

The Crimson Tide dropped game two of the Betty Chancellor Classic to move to 6-1 on the season
KATY, Texas – The Alabama women's basketball team (6-1) dropped its first game of the season, falling 68-58 to Gonzaga in game two of the Betty Chancellor Classic on Saturday. The Crimson Tide will play Liberty on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. CT in the Merrell Center.
Del'Janae "Burger" Williams led Alabama with a season high of 14 points. Essence Cody captured the Tide's first double-double of the year, scoring 13 points with 11 rebounds – a season high in both categories for the freshman.
Gonzaga (6-1) was led by Yvonne Ejim, scoring a game-high 23 points, while collecting an additional eight rebounds and three assists.

- Alabama shot 36 percent (19-of-53) from the floor, 22 percent (4-of-18) from deep and 70 percent (16-of-23) from the line.
- In comparison, Gonzaga shot 48 percent (29-of-60) from the floor, 22 percent (4-of-18) from the three and 75 percent (3-of-4) from the line
- The Tide outscored Gonzaga 37-25 in the second half
- UA had an eight-point advantage off the bench (19-11)
How It Happened
- Alabama struggled from the floor out of the gate, going down 13 points early before closing out the first quarter down 12, 23-11
- The second quarter did not provide any stability to the Tide as the team went into the break trailing by 22 points, 43-21, as UA shot a season low in the half of 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from the floor and just over nine percent (1-of-11) from beyond the arc
- UA went on a 12-4 run over the final four minutes of the third, but the Bulldogs took a 21-point lead into the final frame
- The Tide brought the Bulldogs' within 10-points during the second half
