Samofalov Wins Singles and Doubles Draws at Charity Steel Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –– Alabama's German Samofalov went undefeated at the Charity Steel Open in Birmingham at the Greyston Golf & Country Club, winning the doubles title and the singles title in the red draw at the event. Samofalov won four consecutive singles matches and five doubles matches alongside Tennessee alum Preston Touliatos at the three-day tournament that began July 1.

Samofalov advanced out of group play in doubles, securing three wins in the purple draw with partner Touliatos. In bracket play, the two took a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Luke Wolf and Connor Coleman in the semifinals before recording a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6) victory over Alexey Nesterov and Braden Hannig in the finals. In his match for the singles title, Samofalov downed Jake Faundez in straight sets, going 6-4, 6-3 to win the red draw.

Samofalov is the third UA player to win a singles draw at the tournament and the eighth to capture a doubles title.

Former UA players Alexy Nesterov and Ritchie Kruunenberg also competed in the tournament. Nesterov finished as the runner-up in the blue singles draw while winning the red draw in doubles to advance out of group play. He fell in the finals to Samofalov and Touliatos to finish as the runner-up in doubles. Kruunenberg finished second in the purple doubles draw.
