Welcome Back, Ashley!
We are excited to welcome Ashley Johnston back to Alabama as our new head coach of Crimson Tide gymnastics. Ashley, née Priess, was a 10-time All-American and member of back-to-back NCAA Championships teams in 2011 and 2012. She began her college coaching career at Illinois and spent the last four seasons at Auburn, where she finished her tenure as associate head coach. We look forward to formally introducing her on Friday.
50th Anniversary of Title IX Celebration
On June 23, our department will begin a series of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX in addition to honoring and recognizing the overall history of women's athletics at The University of Alabama. Additionally, there will be merchandising opportunities leading up to June 23, as well as giveaways and a video tribute at sporting events, a comprehensive look at the history of women's athletics integrated into RollTide.com, a social series throughout the fall and a permanent recognition dedicated to those women who paved the way prior to the passage of Title IX. More details to come!
Baseball Advances at SEC Tournament
Our baseball team opened the 2022 SEC Tournament with a 5-3 win over Georgia on a rain-filled Tuesday to advance to the double-elimination portion of the bracket. Brad Bohannon's squad will now face the tournament's No. 3 seed Arkansas, who we just saw to close out the regular season. Best of luck to our team in Hoover!
Track and Field Rolls into Opening Round of the NCAA Championships
Dan Waters' track and field crew opens NCAA Championships competition this week with the NCAA East Preliminary in Bloomington, Ind. With things set to get underway on Wednesday, we have 41 student-athletes who will compete for berths to the national championships' final site in Eugene, Ore., which will take place in early June.
CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors
We're excited to announce that 10 of our student-athletes have earned a place on the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV teams and will go on to the national ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition. Swimmers Morgan Liberto, Derek Maas and Nicholas Perera made the at-large team, while Montana Fouts, Kat Grill, Jenna Johnson and Kaylee Tow made the softball list and Owen Diodati, Tommy Seidl and Drew Williamson earned the baseball honor. These young men and women have demonstrated extraordinary balance between academic and athletic excellence, and we're proud of all they've accomplished to this point in their Crimson Tide careers.
Spring Sports Come to a Close
The 2021-22 season is approaching the finish line with several of our sports ending their seasons in postseason play recently.
- Our rowing team earned its third-consecutive second place team finish at the Big 12 Championships on May 15 after medaling in all five races.
- Men's golf sent both Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder as individuals to the NCAA Bryan Regional, where Canon finished in a five-way tie for fifth after a playoff to determine the top finisher while Thomas tied for 39th.
- Women's golf finished runner-up at the NCAA Franklin Regional to advance to the Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club, where we ended the season on Sunday in 24th place. In addition to the runner-up finish as a team in the regional round, Polly Mack emerged as the individual champion.
- Softball qualified for its 23rd-straight NCAA Tournament and forced a deciding game seven in Sunday's Tuscaloosa Regional before a win for Stanford with runs in the sixth and seventh innings sent the Cardinal on to the Super Regional round.
- Men's and women's tennis both wrapped up seasons this week in the NCAA Singles Tournament. Filip Planinsek won his opening-round match before a loss in the second round to 13th-ranked Matej Vocel of Ohio State. On the women's side, both Loudmilla Bencheikh and Petra Sedlackova advanced to the field of 64, concluding their seasons in the opening round. Â
Men's Basketball Announces Summer Tour
Our men's basketball team will head overseas this summer for a 10-day foreign tour, which will take the Tide to Barcelona and Paris. During this stretch, the team will play three games, two in Spain and one in France. Great opportunity for our team to not only see some game action before the start of the season, but also to gain new cultural experiences.
University Spotlight
The end-of-year video highlighting all that has happened in the last eight months on campus is always something I look forward to seeing. I encourage you to take a look at the 2021-22 version if you have not already seen it. Lots of exciting things going on at the Capstone!
