Alabama Track and Field Off to Strong Start at Crimson Tide Invitational

The Crimson Tide posted strong showings in the throws and distance events on the first day of competition at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama track and field teams got the 2022 Crimson Tide Invitational off to a great start, winning two events and posting 14 top-10 finishes at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium Friday.
In his first collegiate 1,500-meter race, Hillary Cheruiyot ran away from the pack, posting a stellar 3:38.22, which put him three-plus seconds ahead of his closest competition. His mark catapulted him to second all-time at UA, ahead of the legendary David Kimani and behind teammate Eliud Kipsang who ran the collegiate and school record 3:33.74 last weekend.
In the last women's race of the night, Amaris Tyynismaa raced to the front of the women's 5,000 meters and dominated the field, going 16:04.54 to win by nearly a minute.
Kieran McKeag and Bobby Colantonio Jr. both posted career-best marks in the men's hammer throw. McKeag went 71.53 meters, the best effort by a collegian in the competition while Colantonio Jr.'s 70.39 meters was third among collegians. With Friday's marks, McKeag is now second and Colantonio Jr. is fourth all-time for the Tide.
Carson Burian ran a 9:07.41 in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, taking third overall.

- Alexa Cruz was third in the women's 5,000 meters with a 17:08.40, Kerri Walsh was seventh (17:27.92) and Haley Wright (17:45.88) was 10th
- Alabama put four in the top-10 in the women's 1,500 meters, with Megan Patton taking fourth in a career-best time of 4:27.11, Elka Machan going 4:27.84 in her first collegiate 1,500 to take fifth, Kaylie Crews gong 4:31.67 in her first collegiate 1,500 for seventh and a career-best 4:32.06 put Riley Schelp in ninth
- Rich Saenz led the Tide in the men's 5,000 meters, taking seventh with a career-best time of 14:28.81
- Jace Jones took ninth in the men's 1,500 meters with a career-best time of 3:45.46
