
Alabama in Tie for Seventh After 36 Holes of Linger Longer Invitational

Four UA golfers, including three in the starting five, shot even-par or better in Monday’s second round
EATONTON, Ga. – The Alabama men's golf team shot even par in Monday's second round of the Linger Longer Invitational to move up two spots on the leaderboard into a tie for seventh place at 5-over par 581 (293-288) after 36 holes of tournament play.
Thomas Ponder fired off a 4-under par 68 to lead the Tide's lineup, and he will enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for 16th overall at 2-under par 142 (74-68).
Along with Ponder, Jack Goldasich and Canon Claycomb contributed scores of even par or better to the Crimson Tide's team total. Goldasich posted a 1-under par 71 to tie his best round of the 2021-22 campaign, while Claycomb added an even-par 72 for a second consecutive day.
Charlie Nikitas, competing as an individual, posted consecutive rounds of 1-under par 71 and is in a tie with Ponder for 16th at 2-under par 142.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being contested on the par-72, 7,436-yard Great Waters Golf Course in Eatonton, Ga. Alabama will tee off the final round Tuesday morning. Live scoring is available throughout the event at Golfstat.com.
The Highlights
- Both Ponder and Claycomb are among the top 25 heading into Tuesday's final round of play
- Claycomb's 36-hole total of even-par 144 places him in a tie for 25th overall, two strokes back of Ponder
- Ponder's round consisted of five birdies and a bogey to help him vault 21 spots up the leaderboard on moving day
- Goldasich's 1-under 71 matched a season-best round and places him in a tie for 31st overall with a total of 2-over-par 146 (75-71)
- Dillon West shot a 3-over par 77 and is in a tie for 44th at 5-over par 149 (72-77), with JP Cave rounding out the Tide's lineup with a 156 (76-80)
- Nikitas, one of two UA golfers competing as individuals at the event, has collected nine birdies, which leads all Alabama golfers
- Also competing as an individual, Jones Free shot a 4-over par 76 to move into a tie for 53rd at 7-over par 151 (75-76)
The Field
- No. 6 Vanderbilt and No. 10 Georgia finished Monday's second round in a tie for first at 20-under par 556, holding an eight-shot lead on the field
- No.19 Florida is in third place at 12-under par 564, followed by No. 22 Clemson (569) and Charlotte (572) to round out the top five
- The 15-team tournament field features five of the nation's top 25 teams
Next Round
- The Tide will tee off the final round at 7:30 a.m. CT off Hole No. 1 and will be paired alongside USF and Virginia
