Alabama will compete in the final round of the Moon Golf Invitational Tuesday
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The University of Alabama women's golf team improved its first-round score by more than 10 strokes Monday, as the Crimson Tide has now completed 36 holes at the Moon Golf Invitational at the Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla. UA put together a 2-under-par 286 in the second round, tying UCF for the lowest second round, advancing three spots up the leaderboard to find seventh place on a 7-over-par 583 tournament total.
The Crimson Tide will compete in the final round Tuesday. Pairings and tee times will be made available here.
Alabama's second-round score of 2-under-par 286 is 11 strokes improved from its first-round score of 9-over-par 297.
Polly Mack is one reason for that, as she sneaked into the top 10 after posting a 2-under-par 70 in the second round. She remained even on the back nine, but her four birdies on the front nine, including going under par on her final two holes, helped her pace the Crimson Tide Monday. That, combined with her 1-over-par 73 in the first round, helped her to a share of ninth place on a 1-under-par 143 tournament total.
Mack is one of just 13 players in the field under par for the tournament.
Competing in her first tournament for Alabama, Isabella van der Biest continued her consistency Monday, recording a career-low, even-par 72 on day two at the Moon Golf Invitational. Pair that with her 3-over-par 75 on day one, she took a peak inside the top 30 on a 3-over-par 147 tournament total.
Angelica Moresco faced adversity to start her round, going four over through her first eight holes. She attempted a comeback, scoring birdies in three of her next four holes – the par-5 No. 18, the par-4 No. 1 and the par-3 No. 3. The graduate student, who paced the Crimson Tide after the first round with an even-par 72, reported a 2-over-par 74 in Monday's round. She will bring a top-20, 2-over-par 146 into the final 18 holes.
After recording an unusual 8-over-par 80 in the first round, Benedetta Moresco did a 180 Monday. The sophomore star, who is the second-highest ranked individual in the tournament at fourth nationally, put together a 2-under-par 70 in the second round. Her scorecard consisted of 16 pars and two birdies - one on the first nine and one on the back nine. She carries a 6-over-par 150 into the final round, sitting in T45th place.
Emilie Øverås carded a two-over Monday as the junior is tied for 55th place on a 7-over-par 151.
FROM HEAD COACH MIC POTTER
"I was happy with our progress from yesterday to today. We generally put the ball in better positions from the tee, which created more scoring opportunities. We need to continue to improve our ability to read the wind on our approach shots so that we are getting conditions that give us the opportunity to do that. That will pay dividends going froward. Benedetta (Moresco) had a solid bounce back round and Polly (Mack) matched her two-under score. Sarah (Edwards) had a subpar round, and Isabella (van der Biest) continues to be a steady contributor at even par."
