The Crimson Tide posted matching 49.500s on the uneven bars and floor exercise to help earn its fourth-197+ score in a row and third over 197.450
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 8-ranked Alabama gymnastics team beat No. 30 Georgia, 197.475-196.800, Friday night in Coleman Coliseum in front of 10,838 fans dressed in pink during the Crimson Tide's 18th annual Power of Pink meet.Â
Luisa Blanco won the individual title for the uneven bars (9.950) and the all-around (39.500), while Lilly Hudson took top honors on the floor exercise (9.950).
Shallon Olsen posted a 9.900 in the leadoff spot on the vault for the third meet in a row to pace the Crimson Tide to a 49.250. Alabama followed that with a 49.500 on the uneven bars led by 9.9-or-better scores from Cameron Machado, Hudson, Makarri Doggette and Blanco.
The Tide went 49.225 on the balance beam with Olsen scoring a season-best 9.900 to lead the way. Hudson, coming up directly after an injury to Doggette, scored a 9.950, the first of three 9.9-or-better scores in a row to close out the night and the Bulldogs.
Head Coach Dana Duckworth Said
"What's beautiful about this team is that when someone makes a mistake, or someone has had an injury, the next person is ready to go. They step up, they step in and they deliver, and they do it in such a beautiful manner with confidence and grace. On all four events tonight, our lead offs did their job. The goal is to maintain that momentum and kind of get the train rolling. But when we have a dip, the next second is more important. We did that a lot tonight and that will make us stronger.
The energy was electric tonight. The Power of Pink is powerful. I think back 18 years ago when this was created by Sarah Patterson … I talked to her right before the meet and I asked, 'would you ever have thought 18 years later that we would be going this strong?' I also talked to one of our alumni who is a breast cancer survivor about the Power of Pink. She said if one person uses the mammogram fund at DCH, if one person has early detection and gets a mammogram, if one person tonight is inspired by what we did, then we got a win. I truly believe that this is a community sport and that Alabama gymnastics is bigger than just gymnastics."
