
Alabama Men’s Tennis Lands 10 on ITA Scholar-Athlete Team

The program also received ITA All-Academic Team honors for the ninth-straight year
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team placed 10 student-athletes on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Scholar-Athlete Team.
Rudi Christiansen, Gabriel Diaz Freire, Sam Fischer, Jeremy Gschwendtner, Patrick Kaukovalta, Alexey Nesterov, Edson Ortiz, Vincent Rettke, Avi Shugar and Zhe Zhou were recognized for their performance in the classroom.
Nesterov and Ortiz earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for the fifth consecutive year. Fischer and Kaukovalta earned the honor for the fourth time, while Gschwendtner and Zhou were named to the team for the third time and Rettke for his second time. Christiansen, Freire and Shugar picked up their first honor.
As a team, Alabama recorded a 3.66 GPA for the academic year and saw everyone on the team post a 3.0 or better. Christiansen, Freire and Zhou each had a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year. Under head coach George Husack, the Crimson Tide has captured 46 honors as the team qualified as an ITA All-Academic Team for the ninth consecutive season.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: Be a varsity letter winner; have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year; and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
