Alabama’s Rhyan White Makes USA Olympic Team in the 100m Backstroke

White takes second in the 100-meter backstroke to earn a spot on the United States Olympic Team
OMAHA, Neb. – Seeded fourth going into the 100-meter backstroke final at the United States Swimming Olympic Team Trials, Alabama's Rhyan White got her hand on the wall second to earn a spot on Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics.
White, who posted the second fastest time out of prelims with a 58.88 before going 58.99 in the semifinals, cranked out a 58.60 in the finals, finishing in second, 12 hundredths of a second ahead of third place and just a quarter of a second behind Regan Smith.
The Herriman, Utah, native is the third member of the Alabama women's team to make a U.S. Olympic team following Ellen McGrath Owens (diving/1992) & Susan Bartholomew Williams (triathlon/2004) and the first Alabama woman to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team.
Earlier in the day, Kensey McMahon posted a 16:16.09 to advance to the final of the women's 1,500-meter freestyle, an event making its debut at the 2021 Olympic Games.

- Women's 100-meter backstroke final – Rhyan White finished second in a time of 58.60
- Women's 200-meter freestyle prelims – Morgan Scott took 38th (2:02.30) and Cora Dupre was 46th (2:03.02)
- Women's 200-meter individual medley prelims – Cat Wright took 33rd with a 2:17.52
- Women's 1,500-meter freestyle prelims – Kensey McMahon advanced to the finals with a 16:16.09
