BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama men's tennis graduate student Edson Ortiz has been named to the 2021 All-SEC First Team the Southeastern Conference announced Friday.
Ortiz, who has played at the top of the Crimson Tide's roster this season, is now a three-year All-SEC honoree, earning first-team accolades in 2019 and 2021 and second team in 2018. There were no All-SEC honors in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently ranked 45th in the nation in singles, Ortiz has twice been named the SEC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and has also been named to the SEC Men's Tennis Community Service team.
With this year's honor, Alabama has now tallied 51 First Team All-SEC certificates and a combined 76 first- and second-team accolades.
Head Coach George Husack Said
"Edson's tireless work and commitment to improving as a student and athlete on a daily basis is the reason he has again received this honor. We here at Alabama aren't the only ones that have been impacted by his pursuit but so too have his peers in conference. The award is based on SEC coaches' votes which lends to the saying that proof is in the pudding. Edson's path began at the lower end of our lineup in singles and doubles and has developed him into a top competitor who will leave behind a lasting legacy. We are all very proud of him."
