Kipsang is one of only two male distance athletes being considered for the award at this point in the season
NEW ORLEANS – Alabama track & field's freshman Eliud Kipsang secured his spot on the Bowerman Watch List, the award committee announced Thursday afternoon. Kipsang snags the prestigious honor after a record-breaking performance at the Crimson Tide Invite last weekend.
Men's Watch List – April 15
- With a time of 3:36.00, Kipsang set a new program record in the men's 1,500-meter run this past weekend at the Crimson Tide Invite
- The freshman also competed his first 800-meter run (1:47.20), placing first and earning a spot on the all-time top-10 program list for the event
- The distance runner holds the nation's best time in the 1,500-meter run and the nation's fifth-best time in the 800-meter run after his performances at the Crimson Tide Invite
- Eliud Kipsang is the third Alabama man to be named to the watch list in program history, joining Shelby McEwen, who had three appearances in 2019, and Kirani James, who had 11 appearances in 2011.
- Earlier this spring, Kipsang broke the Alabama record in the mile (3:55.93) and continued to beat his own record two times within the indoor season. Kipsang first broke the program record on Feb. 6, which was set by Tim Broe (3:59.38) in 1999
- Kipsang's time puts him seventh on the all-time list for the nation and sixth on the season's top performances list internationally
The Bowerman Award
- The award debuted in 2009 and is named after University of Oregon coach Bill Bowerman
- The Bowerman is awarded annually to the most outstanding male and female NCAA track and field athletes in the nation
- The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) presents the award each year in December
Up Next
- Kipsang and the rest of the Crimson Tide travel squad will head to the LSU Alumni Gold meet next weekend April 23-24 for its first of two back-to-back weekends in Baton Rouge, La.
