A three-run fifth inning and a complete game shutout from Montana Fouts helped clinch the weekend series
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – With the weekend series on the line Sunday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium, Alabama softball used a three-run rally in the fifth inning and a shutout performance in the circle to defeat the Lady Vols, 3-0, and claim the weekend series.
Alabama (24-2, 5-1 SEC) and Tennessee (21-5, 2-4 SEC) were scoreless through the top of the fifth until a one-out walk to Claire Jenkins in the bottom of the inning got the Crimson Tide rally started. Savannah Woodard followed with a single to put two on base and Lexi Kilfoyl followed with another single to drive in Jenkins and make it 1-0. Woodard slid around the tag attempt at home in the next at-bat to make it 2-0 before an Elissa Brown single loaded the bases. KB Sides battled through a nine-pitch at bat to draw the bases-loaded walk and plate another run, bringing the score to 3-0 which proved final.
The three runs were enough to back up a complete-game shutout from Montana Fouts (9-2) in the circle, who struck out eight with just one walk. The Lady Vols earned eight hits on the day, but only one went for extra bases and only three runners made it into scoring position. Friday winner Ashley Rogers (10-4) took the loss in the complete-game effort for Tennessee.
FROM HEAD COACH PATRICK MURPHY
"It was just a really good series win for us against a really good opponent, I am proud of everybody. Montana did a great job, I figured only one run would be necessary and it was. She just hit her spots really well and got her speed up too. Our whole defense played well today. When you only get three hits, you pray that all three come in one inning and they did. We showed some really good base-running skills with some great slides today. This is a big win for us."
