NCAA Champion Mercy Chelangat along with Amaris Tyynismaa and Ester Gitahi are all named All-Americans following a stand-out showing at Monday’s NCAA Championships
NEW ORLEANS – A trio of Alabama women earned All-America honors for the 2020 NCAA Division I Cross Country season the USTFCCCA announced this week. Mercy Chelangat won the individual NCAA Cross Country crown on Monday, leading Alabama to an eighth-place team finish.
Chelangat, Amaris Tyynismaa and Esther Gitahi each earned All-America honors, giving UA the second-highest total nationally, one behind national champion BYU. The Crimson Tide was one of just eight schools to have more than one student-athlete earn All-America honors this season.
Alabama was one of just two Southeastern Conference schools to earn All-America honors this year and the only one to earn multiple honors.
This year sets the record for All-America accolades in a season for the UA women. Prior to this season, nine Alabama women earned 10 cross country All-America honors, and never more than two in a season. The Tide's last honor before this season came in 1995.
