Alabama recorded a 2-under-par 286 for a share of sixth place
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Alabama women's golf team has positioned itself in the middle of the field after the first round at Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at Finley Golf Course (par 72, 6,393 yards) in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Crimson Tide lineup recorded a 2-under-par 286 Friday, sharing sixth place in the 18-team field.
For the third straight tournament this season, Benedetta Moresco paces the Crimson Tide lineup through the first 18 holes. In each of her last two outings, the sophomore has found herself in the top five after the first round and this morning proved no different. Moresco is tied for second place in the 96-person field on the heels of a 4-under-par 68, a round that featured four birdies.
Ironic enough, the All-American has posted a 4-under-par 68 in the first round in all three of her tournaments this fall. In each of those tournaments, she has garnered top-15 finishes.
The Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational tournament field features 18 teams, including 13 teams ranked in the nation's top 50, according to the latest Golfweek rankings. No. 12 Alabama is squaring off against No. 8 Michigan, No. 13 Wake Forest, No. 14 Duke, No. 28 Virginia Tech, No. 29 Furman, No. 31 Vanderbilt, No. 34 Kentucky, No. 41 Mississippi State, No. 43 Ohio State, No. 44 Clemson, No. 45 North Carolina, No. 48 Michigan State, Maryland, Southern Methodist, NC State and UNC Wilmington.
Four strokes separate Alabama (2-under-par 286) and tournament leader Virginia Tech (6-under-par 282).
Polly Mack and Emilie Øverås are sharing a tie of 27th place after posting an even par in each of their opening rounds.
Mack found adversity to begin her round, recording a trio of bogeys through her first four holes. However, the fifth year responded with four birdies through her next five holes to conclude the front nine one under. She added a couple bogeys and another birdie on the back nine to turn in a 72, her lowest opening round of the season.
Øverås found a steadier route to even par, marking a pair of bogeys and a pair of birdies on her scorecard.
Like Mack, Edwards recorded her lowest opening round of the season, posting a 2-over-par 74 through 18 holes in Chapel Hill. The junior transfer is tied for 53rd, while her season review suggests that her traditional best golf, the second round, is still to come.
Angelica Moresco did not compete.
The Crimson Tide will tee off on hole No. 1 Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CT, paired with Clemson and Michigan.
FROM HEAD COACH MIC POTTER
"I am proud of these ladies for overcoming the bit of adversity we faced today. We really didn't know if Angy (Angelica Moresco) would be able to play today or not, but they handled their business on the course, and I think they did a great job of taking care of themselves. They did what they were supposed to do, they kept themselves in the tournament, and I'm proud of that effort and commitment."
